Chapter 1408 Yunrui's Sincere Devotion: The Cobra's Man
"Mr. Shen! Something terrible has happened!" A guard's urgent shouts came from outside the door, accompanied by hurried footsteps. "Someone has infiltrated the basement and attacked the cell guards. It seems they're after Gu Yunxi!"
Shen Chengyu abruptly stood up, his earlier hesitation and exhaustion instantly replaced by vigilance and rage. He grabbed the pistol from the table, strode to the door, opened it, and his eyes were sharp as knives: "Where is he? Did you catch him?"
"Not yet, the other person is too skilled, they've already slipped into the underground passage, we're in pursuit!" The guard was pale and his voice was panicked, "The basement surveillance cameras were destroyed, we only saw a dark figure, the shape somewhat resembled Assistant Zhou..."
"Assistant Zhou?" Shen Chengyu's eyes darkened, his heart feeling as if it were being squeezed by an invisible hand. It really was him! Eight years of trust, all for naught! He took a deep breath, suppressing the turmoil in his heart, and said coldly, "Take me to see him!"
He walked quickly toward the underground cell, his steps heavy, each one feeling as if he were stepping on his own troubled heart.
He hoped he was wrong, that the guard had simply misjudged him, but the replays of Assistant Zhou's mistakes during the day, the shadowy figure, and his own suspicions about him made his heart sink.
Just as he reached the entrance of the main laboratory, a familiar figure approached from the opposite direction—it was Assistant Zhou. He was wearing a sharp suit, holding a document in his hand, and his face still wore that cold and respectful expression, as if the intrusion that had just occurred had nothing to do with him.
"Mr. Shen, where are you headed?" Upon seeing Shen Chengyu, Cangying immediately bowed respectfully, his tone calm. "The guests for the victory celebration banquet have been arriving one after another, and I was just about to report to you..."
Shen Chengyu stopped abruptly, his eyes fixed on him. Cangying's suit was spotless, without any signs of climbing or fighting, and his face showed no panic; even his breathing was steady.
More importantly, he was followed by two subordinates who were responsible for receiving guests. The two men can testify that Assistant Zhou was busy with them in the banquet hall the whole time and never left.
"Where were you just now?" Shen Chengyu's voice was slightly hoarse, his eyes filled with inquiry and confusion, as well as a hint of relief.
"I just finished explaining some things to them and was just about to come find you." The eagle met his gaze calmly, its tone still respectful. "What is it, Mr. Shen? What happened?"
The guards around Shen Chengyu were also stunned, and subconsciously looked at Shen Chengyu with their eyes full of doubt - just now they clearly felt that the figure in the shadow looked a lot like Assistant Zhou, but now it seems that he had no time to commit the crime.
Shen Chengyu's feelings were extremely complicated. His suspicions had been dispelled, but the violence and determination he had just displayed had reached their peak, and now that he suddenly had no one to vent his anger on, he felt a sense of suffocation all over.
He looked at Assistant Zhou in front of him, and the scenes of their eight years together flashed through his mind, from the naivety of their first meeting to the composure later on, and now to the calmness at this moment. For a moment, he was in a daze.
"It's nothing, someone sneaked into the basement, and we've already given chase." He put away his pistol, his tone regaining some calm, but the complexity in his eyes remained. "Come with me."
Eagle's heart skipped a beat; he knew the first step of the plan had succeeded—the "shadow" from before was someone Frog had arranged to distract Shen Chengyu and create an opportunity for him. He followed Shen Chengyu discreetly, while his subordinates tactfully withdrew.
The two reached the entrance to the underground cell, where guards were cleaning up the scene. Shen Chengyu glanced at the fallen guard, then at the pried-open cell door lock, his eyes hardening again. "Pass the word down: seal off all underground passages. Even if you have to dig three feet into the ground, find him!" he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Just then, a guard ran up from the underpass, dragging a man who was beaten to the point of near death, his face beaming with excitement: "Mr. Shen, we caught him! This kid was hiding around the corner of the passage, and he was trying to fight back!"
The man was thrown to the ground, dressed in black night clothes, his face covered in blood, making his features unrecognizable. Shen Chengyu squatted down, grabbed his hair, and forced him to look up. The man's eyes were fierce, and he was cursing in a thick, broken dialect.
“They’re from ‘Cobra’,” Eagle said calmly from the side. “Looks like they’re trying to take advantage of the chaos at the celebration banquet to rescue Gu Yunxi and cause you trouble.”
A cruel smile curled at the corner of Shen Chengyu's lips: "'Cobra'? You've got some nerve, daring to snatch someone right under my nose." He released his grip, stood up, and took a dagger from the guard. "Since you're here, you're not leaving."
Without a word, he swiftly brought his knife down, blood spurting out and staining his black leather jacket. The severed head rolled to the ground, eyes wide open, identical to the one the eagle had seen during the day.
Shen Chengyu straightened up, covered in blood, his face and hands stained with warm blood. He didn't look at the corpse on the ground, but turned around and stared straight at Assistant Zhou in front of him.
The air froze instantly...
The two were less than a meter apart, and Shen Chengyu's eyes were extremely complicated—there was ruthlessness, doubt, reluctance, and a hint of probing that was hard to explain.
He had just personally severed the head of the traitor, just as he had said during the day, "Those who betray me never have a good end." This was a show for everyone, and also for Assistant Zhou; it was a further blow to the slight flaw he had made during the day, and also an outlet for his own pent-up emotions throughout the day.
The eagle's face remained expressionless, showing neither fear nor surprise, as if the bloody scene before him had nothing to do with him.
He simply looked at Shen Chengyu quietly, his eyes as calm as a deep pool of water.
As "Assistant Zhou," he was already used to Shen Chengyu's ruthlessness. His silence and stare at this moment were just routine "intimidation." As a hawk, he could read the complexity in Shen Chengyu's eyes and knew that behind this "reprimand" was a tug-of-war between trust and doubt.
After a long while, Cangying took out a pack of tissues from his pocket, stepped forward, and handed it to Shen Chengyu, his tone still respectful and considerate: "Mr. Shen, please wipe your hands. The guests at the celebration banquet are still waiting for you. If you go over like this, I'm afraid it will frighten them."
Shen Chengyu looked at the tissue he was offered, then at his calm, expressionless face. A surge of complex emotions welled up inside him, only to be instantly suppressed. He didn't take the tissue, but instead gave Cangying a deep look, as if trying to etch his image into his very bones.
“No need.” His voice was hoarse as he turned and walked towards the stairwell. “Clean this place up first, then come to the banquet hall.”
"Yes, Mr. Shen." Cangying bowed in response, and only after watching Shen Chengyu's blood-covered figure disappear at the top of the stairs did he slowly straighten up.
His palms were already soaked with cold sweat; the confrontation just now was more dangerous than any battle. Shen Chengyu's eyes were like a knife, almost piercing through his disguise. But he knew he had won his gamble—Shen Chengyu's hesitation and probing had temporarily put him safe.
At the top of the stairs, Shen Chengyu paused, glancing back towards the underground cell, a hint of confusion in his eyes. He had personally killed the traitor, confirming his words and venting his emotions, but why hadn't that lingering doubt disappeared?
The celebratory music had already started, and the guests' laughter and chatter drifted down the stairs, creating a stark contrast with the bloody stench of the underground prison...
