Chapter 644 Bilateral Talks
Chapter 644 Bilateral Talks
“Choose…choose…” Ganz clenched his fists tightly, his forehead sweating with tension.
"Make a decision quickly. If you want to save the baby, you need to do it as soon as possible. You can't delay any longer," the doctor urged.
Just when they were in a dilemma, Gan Yi, lying on his sickbed, suddenly spoke—
"Gouge it out."
"elder brother--!"
Gan Yi managed a weak smile, but it aggravated his injured left eye, causing his facial muscles to tremble with pain, and he clenched his teeth.
After this moment passed, he spoke again: "It's not like you're blind. You still have one good eye. As long as you can see, that's enough. Don't make things worse and end up with nothing left."
Ganz looked up at Xu Weiwei: "Is there really no other way...?"
Xu Weiwei felt a pang of pain in her heart and lowered her head.
“Then, let’s go with the first one,” Ganz said, closing his eyes.
Removing the eyeball is much simpler than trying to repair it; the entire surgery lasted less than two hours.
When he came out again, Gan Yi's face was wrapped in gauze. The area under the gauze was not dry or shriveled, and it seemed that nothing was missing. What supported it was an implanted prosthetic eye.
Xu Weiwei explained to Gantz that it was a support device. It could maintain the normal shape of the eye socket, making it look closer to a normal person. Later, a prosthetic eye that was exactly the same could be customized according to the individual's pupil color.
Ganz nodded after listening. He helped the doctor move his second brother to a regular intensive care unit on the starship.
The chief also came in a wheelchair during the surgery.
After learning the details, he didn't seem to react much, only saying, "It's good that you're still alive."
The once large and happy family is now reduced to three: one standing, one sitting, and one lying down. Their figures are forlorn.
Xu Weiwei couldn't bear to watch this scene and silently turned and left.
"It's no good to associate too closely with these lowly people. You should be mindful of your status, Selviel."
Xu Weiwei stopped and turned around. Fast leaned against the wall, looking relaxed and indifferent, as if he were just on vacation.
"I heard that your research center has expanded again and has reached cooperation agreements with experts from Dawn on many new projects. At such a critical moment, won't it be a problem for you to leave the team?"
Fast slowly approached until his body was at the same level as Xu Weiwei's, then tilted his head and whispered in her ear, "Fish in the sea are born to be food. Humans don't, and shouldn't, cry for 'food.' You're so smart, you should know who your kind are, right?"
Xu Weiwei stared at him, took a step back to create some distance, then looked away and left.
What was originally a case of "not being able to see eye to eye" turned into obedience in Fast's eyes.
Fast smiled with satisfaction. As his candidate for queen, Selviel was excellent, only sometimes neglecting her duties. Fortunately, he was there to guide her, preventing her from making the same mistakes again.
Outside, the last group of rescued people had completed their registration, and the soldiers went to report to Sifus after counting the number of people.
"There are 19 children and 11 adults in total. Half of the children are orphans, and all their immediate family members have died. They have been temporarily assigned to other relatives for care... That's all. I'm going to distribute the supplies to them now that I have no further instructions."
Sifus was discussing something with the other sergeants. After listening, he casually said, "Go ahead," and then remembered something.
"Wait a moment."
The soldier returned. "General, is there anything else?"
"Just provide food and water, nothing else."
"Yes."
It seems they won't be staying here much longer, the soldier thought. Most likely, they'll be heading back tonight.
What to do with these refugees? Leave them here? They probably won't survive long. But if we take them back, there are so many—how will we accommodate them? Besides, the Empire has never taken in interstellar refugees before…
The soldier muttered a few words to himself, but on the surface, he continued doing what he was doing as usual, without revealing a word.
Military discipline is iron; they are all rigorously trained.
Siforth and three sergeants held a 30-minute meeting in the command room.
When they came out again, everyone was in a hurry.
"Where's Gantz? Tell him to come over and help me check the list again."
"First squad, numbers 1 to 15, assemble!"
"Squad 1 through 10, come with me."
There was a knock on the ward door: "Is the chief in?"...
Soldiers were coming and going, and escort ships were flying out one after another. Anyone with eyes could see that something big was about to happen.
The Goodale people in the camp watched this scene with a mix of tension and bewilderment.
The three siblings all had a premonition, so they went to find Siforth.
"Father, are we leaving? What will happen to these people?" Xu Weiwei asked directly.
Sifus pulled out a chair next to her and let her sit down. Kane and Ryan also found seats.
"They will come with us."
Xu Weiwei felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. Having received this answer, nothing else mattered.
"Where should we put them? Should we take them back to the capital planet?" Ryan asked immediately, puzzled.
"How could that be? The Imperial Capital Star has never been so easy to enter. These people might be scattered and placed on a few planets in the Eighth Planetary Belt." Kane stated the facts without any hint of belittling.
Sifus did not affirm any of their statements, but instead cautiously said, "This needs to be discussed before a decision is made."
Soon, Fast arrived. The chief was also wheeled in. The two sat facing each other, one on each side of the long table.
The chief awkwardly tugged at his clothes, adjusted his posture, and then nodded to Fast across from him.
This was a form of etiquette that his partner Siforth had taught him.
He glanced at the other person instinctively, and Sifus returned a firm look.
The chief took a deep breath, the words they had spoken in the operating room when they met again echoing in his ears—
Sometimes it takes more courage to live than to die.
"The struggle to survive can be humiliating and undignified. But human life is so precious that it should be exchanged for something equally precious."
"There are a million possibilities in life, but when you die, it's all over. To cover up your crimes, even the trace of your existence will be completely erased. Are you willing to accept that?"
“If you continue to hold out, once our people withdraw, these three hundred-plus people will immediately become thirty-plus people. Do you want the extinction of your race to happen to the Goodell people?”
"Don't you all believe in 'divine will' and think that the will of Heaven is inviolable? But how do you know whether Heaven wants you to perish or to seize this opportunity?"
"Don't you want revenge?"
……
The chief gripped the armrest of his wheelchair.
Priest, I hope you won't blame me for this decision.
