Chapter 2240 Poisoning
Chapter 2240 Poisoning
The shop assistant dared not neglect him and quickly responded, carefully bringing over a cup of hot tea and handing it to Wu Liang.
"Please enjoy your meal, shopkeeper."
Wu Liang took the teacup and drank two sips. The tea slid down his throat, moisturizing his dry throat.
He suddenly stopped moving, his brows furrowed tightly, and his face turned pale instantly, even showing a hint of blue.
The shop assistant, standing to the side, noticed his appearance and, feeling puzzled, couldn't help but ask in a low voice, "Shopkeeper, what's wrong?"
Wu Liang did not answer. He suddenly raised his head, opened his mouth, and a mouthful of bright red blood suddenly spilled from the corner of his mouth, dripping down his chin onto his clothes, staining a patch of fabric red.
"puff--"
The scene happened so suddenly that the waiter turned pale with fright, and the tray in his hand fell to the ground with a crash, shattering the teacups.
He exclaimed in surprise, "Shopkeeper! What's wrong?"
Hearing the commotion, the other employees gathered around and panicked when they saw Manager Qi spitting blood.
"Are you alright, shopkeeper?"
"Go and fetch a doctor!"
Wu Liang rolled his eyes and his body went limp as he fell forward.
"The shopkeeper's!"
The shop assistants were shocked and quickly reached out to help, and chaotic shouts instantly filled the entire medicinal food shop.
About 15 minutes later, Wu Liang struggled to open his eyelids and, through the blurry vision, first encountered several pairs of concerned eyes.
The room was dimly lit, and a bitter herbal scent lingered in the air.
"Shopkeeper, you're awake?" A slightly joyful voice rang out. It was the shop assistant, whose face still showed lingering panic. "You're finally awake! You scared us half to death!"
Wu Liang slowly turned his eyes and saw the people in front of him clearly: a doctor in a blue cloth robe was packing his medicine box, and three assistants were standing next to him, one carrying a basin of water and the other holding a handkerchief, all of them looking nervous.
Before coming, I already knew from the guards how many people were in this shop.
He quickly went through the list in his mind. Most of the people in the shop were there, except for Liu, the accountant who sat in the accounting room every day working on his abacus.
In a shop, the manager oversees everything, and the accountant manages the money and accounts. These are usually the two most important people. Now that he is unconscious, the accountant, Liu, is nowhere to be found, which is really strange.
He raised his hand to his forehead, deliberately letting out two low groans, his voice hoarse and weak from just waking up: "What... what's wrong with me? Why does my head hurt so much?"
Upon hearing this, the doctor who was packing his medicine box turned around, his expression serious. He reached out to check the man's pulse, then examined his eyelids, and said in a deep voice, "Shopkeeper, you have been poisoned."
Fortunately, the toxicity wasn't too severe. I've already expelled most of the toxins with injections, and I'm no longer in mortal danger. However, I'm still weak and need to rest for a few days.
"Poisoned?" Wu Liang feigned surprise, his brows furrowing and his eyes filled with incomprehension. "How could I be poisoned?"
Everything was fine today. I only had a cup of tea and didn't touch anything unclean.
As he spoke, he casually glanced around the room, finally fixing his gaze on the shop assistants, his tone tinged with doubt, "By the way, where's Accountant Liu?"
The waiter, Amin, quickly replied, "Accountant Liu left shortly after you fainted, saying he would be right back and asked us to take good care of you."
Wu Liang sneered inwardly. The shopkeeper was poisoned and unconscious. Even the most important matters should be put aside for now. There was no reason for him to leave at this moment.
He became increasingly certain that this accountant Liu was either a confidant of Manager Qi who rushed to his aid when he was in trouble, or he had long since betrayed the real Manager Qi, otherwise he would never have been absent at such a critical moment.
He remained expressionless, only waving his hand wearily: "I know. You've all been busy for half the day, you can all go out now, I want to lie down for a while longer, my head is throbbing."
"Yes," the men replied without daring to disturb him further and withdrew. Before leaving, the doctor gave a few more instructions, such as "take your medicine on time" and "avoid spicy and greasy foods," and then left the room with his medicine box.
The door closed gently, and the room instantly fell silent, with only the occasional chirping of insects coming from outside the window.
Wu Liang didn't actually close his eyes to rest. He lay on his side on the bed, listening to the sounds outside the door, and thinking about his next move.
The accountant Liu is most likely going out to tip off someone, and what he's waiting for is the person Liu brought—whether it's Zhou Zhenghang or any other accomplices. As long as they can get this lead, this whole charade of impersonating Manager Qi will have been worthwhile.
He waited patiently, and after about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, he heard footsteps outside the door.
It wasn't just one person, but two people.
Wu Liang immediately adjusted his posture, placing his hand on his forehead again, his brows furrowed, a pained expression on his face, and his eyes tightly closed.
The door was gently pushed open, and two figures walked in, their footsteps stopping in front of the bed.
"Manager?" Liu the accountant's voice rang in his ears, tinged with a hint of probing. He called out twice but received no response. He was about to call again when the person next to him raised his hand to stop him.
Wu Liang felt a sharp gaze fall on him, as if scrutinizing him closely, a gaze filled with examination and inquiry.
This reminded him of the words the princess had once told him—Zhou Zhenghang was a deep thinker, suspicious and observant, and he would only believe something if he verified it himself.
He held his breath, maintaining the painful sleeping position, until that gaze lingered for a moment before he slowly opened his eyes, his gaze still carrying the confusion of just waking up. It wasn't until he saw the two people in front of the bed that he seemed to come back to his senses.
Standing in front of the bed were Liu the accountant and Zhou Zhenghang.
Accountant Liu was wearing a gray cloth long gown, and his face showed a hint of anxiety.
Zhou Zhenghang was dressed in a dark blue brocade robe with a jade belt around his waist. His face was stern, his brows were slightly furrowed, and he was staring at him intently.
"Manager Zhou... Manager Zhou?" Wu Liang feigned surprise, struggling to sit up, but seemed utterly weak. He barely managed to lift himself before collapsing back onto the bed, coughing twice, his voice even more hoarse. "Why are you here?"
Accountant Liu quickly stepped forward to help him up, placed a pillow behind his back, and whispered, "Manager, I was really uneasy after you fainted. I thought this matter was strange, so I went to ask Manager Zhou to come and take a look."
You two have always been on good terms, and Manager Zhou is very knowledgeable; perhaps he can help investigate who is trying to harm you.
Wu Liang leaned back against the pillow, took a breath, and looked at Zhou Zhenghang with gratitude in his eyes: "Thank you so much for troubling you at a time like this."
Zhou Zhenghang didn't reply, but his gaze continued to scrutinize his face, from his pale complexion to his chapped lips, and finally to his hoarse voice.
Zhou Zhenghang frowned even more: "I just heard from Lao Liu that you were sick, but you look like you've suffered a great ordeal?"
