Chapter 38 She attacked, but her defense was 0.
Although the process was a bit tortuous, the ending was still good. Director Mao finally showed a satisfied smile on the last take, and the shot was approved in the morning.
Let's take a break and have lunch to avoid the hottest part of the day, as we have another shoot to do in the afternoon.
Chen Che found a shady corner to sit down, eager to see what the lunch would be.
If you don't eat well, there's something wrong with your brain.
It looked like a big chicken leg, a stir-fried pork with green peppers, a side of bean sprouts and cabbage, and a bottle of mineral water.
One large meat dish, one small meat dish, and two vegetable dishes—it's just a regular fast food meal, not particularly delicious but certainly not bad either, and it's free, so it's pretty good.
After taking a few bites of rice, Chen Sui, with a happy smile on her face, walked over with the food.
"Hey, Chen Che, the director just chatted with me for a bit, guess what he said?" Chen Sui asked deliberately, sitting not far from Chen Che.
"What's there to ask? If you want to talk about it, then talk about it; if you don't want to, then don't." Chen Che wasn't buying into any of that playing hard to get; it was obvious she wouldn't be able to resist sharing.
"You're really something, sometimes you seem very reliable, and other times you're so annoying." When they were alone, Chen Sui was getting more and more used to saying whatever was on her mind when she spoke to Chen Che.
"The director praised me for being upright, having a unique temperament, and possessing the spirit of a female hero. He asked if I would consider debuting as an actress, saying that I would definitely become a big star in the future." Chen Sui proudly revealed a row of pearly teeth.
"You agreed?" Chen Che asked warily.
"No, of course I'll continue to study hard." Chen Sui shook her head.
"Luckily you didn't agree."
"Is it possible that Director Mao is just saying nice things to you? He wouldn't tell you to your face that your acting was terrible. A director must have that much emotional intelligence, right? If you actually agree, you'll really make a fool of yourself." Chen Che didn't flatter him at all and bluntly criticized him.
"You, are you just jealous of others doing well?" Chen Sui had hoped to get some compliments from him, but this guy didn't give her any face at all.
On the contrary, Chen Che breathed a sigh of relief. These days, there are many stories of female college students being cheated out of their money and their lives by fake talent scouts and fake directors. Not to mention, in this industry, how can there be no unspoken rules?
If she were to stubbornly plunge headlong into this bottomless river, I really wouldn't know how to persuade her to come back. A director's promise of a star's dream is far more valuable than the river god's golden axe.
Chen Sui suddenly changed the subject: "Hey, Chen Che."
"What are you doing?"
"I'll give you my chicken leg."
"What are you planning to do now?"
"It's nothing. Thank you for your hard work in organizing this and for giving me the credit. It must have been very difficult," Chen Sui said earnestly.
Chen Che snorted, "That's definitely not easy. I don't want to. You think you can repay a favor with just a chicken leg? Do you think my favors are that cheap?"
"Then tell me why you're helping me like this? What do you want me to do by owing you a favor? Hmm?" Chen Sui's eyes darted around, a crescent moon curving her lips, and she suddenly launched an attack.
Chen Che glanced at her, said nothing, and silently ate his own food.
Seeing Chen Che remain silent, Chen Sui thought he had been thwarted. Such a rare sight should be seized by her to press her advantage.
Then, on a whim, he leaned closer to Chen Che and asked with a hint of mockery:
"Could it be... that you have feelings for me?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, Chen Sui regretted them.
What am I even saying?!
What do you mean by "what he thinks of himself"?
Isn't this an implication that he's confessing his feelings to her?
She wasn't even sure if Chen Che liked her.
If I don't like it, wouldn't I be humiliating myself?
What if he actually tells you?
I haven't mentally prepared myself yet. Should I say yes or no?
No, does he even like me?
Uh... this... oh... that...
Chen Sui felt her brain's thinking and calculation workload, as well as her body temperature, rising rapidly, but the more she calculated, the less she understood.
Seeing her face turn slightly red and her visibly embarrassed, Chen Che rolled his eyes inwardly. With your level of skill, you suddenly want to be direct?
After thinking for a moment, Chen Che looked into Chen Sui's eyes and said seriously, "Class monitor, I don't have any special ideas. I'm just on the same side as you, so I looked for a way to see if it could be used as a plan for our group activity."
And I don't know if you've noticed, but you're slowly becoming the person you want to be: a responsible and good class monitor who puts the interests of the class first and thinks about issues from the perspective of your classmates.
This reminds me of what I told you before: I can't go back on my word and let good people have guns pointed at me.
Chen Che finished speaking in one breath.
"Is that so?"
"What else?"
"All right."
After hearing this, Chen Sui felt her temperature drop. Thank goodness, if Chen Che had really said he liked her, she would have frozen in shock.
However, an unnamed sense of loss began to take hold of my heart.
After finishing their meal, they boarded the bus to rest for a while. The two of them were the last to board, so in order not to disturb the other students, they sat on either side of the last row. Chen Sui fell asleep soon after.
Chen Che looked left and right, and Chen Sui's sleeping face was exposed to him without any cover. Her eyelashes were slightly curled, her face was flushed with a healthy blush, and her cherry lips were delicate and bright.
Suddenly frowning, Chen Che thought she was about to open her eyes, so he quickly looked away. But it turned out she was just making a feint, and then a soft, even breathing sound came from her nose.
Soon Chen Che also closed his eyes and fell asleep. The bus was quiet. Chen Sui, sitting next to him, slowly and quietly opened her eyes. The shyness she had just held back immediately spread across her pretty face, starting from her ears and all the way down her neck. Luckily, the bus had air conditioning...
The scene that started in the afternoon was completely different.
Director Mao gave a brief explanation, explaining that the next scene they would be filming was a male undercover agent among the students who had taken a female student hostage.
The group exchanged bewildered glances. They had just finished playing patriotic students in a march that morning, and now they were going to play villains in the afternoon. The contrast was too great, and there was even a close-up of their faces. They were a little embarrassed, and for a moment no one responded. Chen Che silently pulled everyone in front of him and settled down to be a bystander.
"Director, I recommend Chen Che from our class," someone suggested.
Ok?
Chen Che thought to himself that he had been betrayed again, and turned to look at Bai Mu, who was indeed smiling at him.
"Then Chen Che, you'll do it." Director Mao didn't want to dwell on it for too long. Chen Che was the person he had been in contact with from beginning to end. He knew him and could call him by name. Since someone had recommended him, it couldn't be more suitable.
Chen Che calmly walked out of the crowd; he refused to do anything, but he wasn't afraid of trouble.
"Next, we need a female student to play the hostage," Director Mao continued.
The crowd was eerily silent; it seemed everyone just wanted to remain a background figure.
"Chen Che, you choose." Director Mao didn't want to waste any more words and directly delegated the authority.
Chen Che's eyes swept across the crowd, finally landing on Chen Sui.
"I'll do it," Chen Sui said, stepping forward gracefully.
"You can come... but why do I feel like you're so looking forward to it, class monitor?" Chen Che joked.
"Of course I'm looking forward to it," Chen Sui smiled, revealing a row of pearly teeth, her starry eyes sparkling. "Who wouldn't want to be a character with a significant role in a story?"
After changing clothes and posing, Chen Che held the model knife to Chen Sui's neck. It seemed like a simple and routine action, but since they were a man and a woman, Chen Che had to be careful not to rub against certain parts of her body while holding her shoulder.
Chen Che was being careful and cautious when he turned his head and found Chen Sui looking at him with a tender expression, which left Chen Che speechless.
"Squad leader, we're filming a proper war movie, not some messy romance. Look away from your eyes; you're looking at your mortal enemy."
"Huh? Oh..."
Chen Sui paused for a moment, then her eyes suddenly sharpened and hardened.
Although Chen Sui's hair was disheveled for the sake of effect, her inherent temperament, with her proud and slender neck held high, actually created an air of fearlessness towards power and death.
Chen Che was also somewhat mesmerized by what he saw.
Chen Che pretended to be fierce and shouted at the crowd, "Don't move! If anyone gets close, I'll stab the hostage to death right now!"
Chen Sui's expression was solemn, but in her heart she was thinking, "Will I be held hostage like this for the rest of my life?"
