Chapter 115 Gout
Chapter 115 Gout
After finishing their meal at their temporary encampment and resting briefly, the orcs set off again, reaching the seaside before nightfall.
Fortunately, they set off relatively early, and it wasn't too late when they arrived at the seaside. Pig Mountain led several sub-beastmen to their former salt-making settlement.
This was the first time the few sub-beastmen had come to the sea. Rat Moon looked curiously at the boundless ocean before her and asked, "Is this where we extract salt?"
Lin Baiyan smiled and nodded, "Yes, but it's too late today. Let's rest for a bit and start again tomorrow."
They put everything in the old shed, where the male beastmen had been collecting salt on several occasions.
There were many male orcs, and they didn't repair the shed; the simple thatched hut looked rather dilapidated.
Lin Baiyan stared blankly at the large hole in the roof of the shed, wondering how they managed to live there.
Zhu Shan scratched his head somewhat sheepishly, "That's from when Hu Qiu and Xiong Fei were fighting over food last time..."
They were even punished by Lang Cang at the time, and the two of them went hunting for those few days.
Lin Baiyan wiped away non-existent beads of sweat from his forehead. "Then why don't you guys fix it?"
Zhushan was even more embarrassed, "Everyone was so busy collecting seafood..."
Aside from extracting salt, they spend most of their time collecting seafood. Where would they find the time to repair any houses?
Besides, it wasn't a very big hole, was it? They figured they could make do and live there.
Lin Baiyan waved his hand and said to the fox shadow beside him, "Let's find some leaves to make do for the night, and we'll fix up the shed tomorrow."
March brings frequent spring rains, so they plan to stay here for a few days to avoid having to repair the shed before it actually rains.
Fox Shadow nodded and asked Pig Mountain to take him to find the stream where he could fetch water.
Lin Baiyan, along with Shuyue and Yangye, cleaned up the area under the shed, and replaced the two stone pots used for boiling salt with the earthenware pots they had brought.
Earthenware pots heat up quickly, which makes them much more convenient.
After packing up, Lin Baiyan slung his basket over his shoulder, held a pair of bamboo tongs in his hand, turned to Shuyue and Yangye with a smile, and said, "Let's go, I'll take you to the beach!"
"Badger, stay here and wait a bit. When Zhu Shan and the others return, tell them that if you want to come over with us, then you can."
Badger nodded obediently.
"The seafood we brought back to the tribe before was found here." Lin Baiyan walked in front of the two sub-beastmen and pointed to a spot not far away where the beach was almost piled with all kinds of fish and shrimp.
The pile of things looked incredibly dense, leaving both Shu Yue and Yang Ye speechless. "These things are just piled up here, and nobody wants them?"
Lin Baiyan nodded. "Yes, it will spoil if we can't eat it all."
Upon hearing that the food would spoil, both of them immediately showed expressions of deep distress; it was all food!
They don't have enough food for them, but there's so much here!
Lin Baiyan found it somewhat amusing, "Don't make that face."
"You can't eat too much fish and shrimp, or you'll get gout if you eat them every day."
gout?
Rat Moon was puzzled, "How can the wind feel painful?"
Lin Baiyan was so amused by his description that she bent over laughing. After a moment, she straightened up and explained, "That's not what I meant."
"It's fine to eat these fish and shrimp once or twice, but if you eat them every day, your body can't handle it."
"Think about it, aren't older orcs prone to knee and finger pain? If you let them eat this a couple more times, they'll be in excruciating pain."
Oh, I see.
Shuyue hesitated for a moment, "So, should we eat it or not?"
Lin Baiyan thought for a moment. The beastmen hadn't had much of a reaction to the seafood he brought back these past few times, so it seemed they weren't likely to get gout.
But just to be on the safe side, he cautiously said, "It's okay, we don't eat this every day, and nothing's happened before, right?"
"However, injured beastmen must not eat these, or their wounds will not heal!"
Yang Ye reached out and picked up a mantis shrimp, throwing it into his basket. "If the priest says it's alright, then it's alright. We'll only be eating these for four or five days."
Relieved, Shu Yue happily ran towards the beach with Yang Ye, while Lin Baiyan went to the place where they had previously shucked oysters to collect oyster meat.
The jar of oyster sauce he made earlier has been used up. Before the snowy season, Lang Cangxue mainly came to the beach to collect salt, so he didn't have time to prepare oysters.
They've been out of stock for a long time!
He's going to make a lot this time, since the oyster sauce won't spoil easily anyway.
Lin Baiyan randomly found a rock, squatted down and started prying oysters, one after another, and soon he had accumulated half a basket of oyster meat.
During the month of Rat Moon and Sheep Leaf, their baskets were full. They even returned to their temporary camp and brought Fox Shadow and Pig Mountain Badger with them.
Several people worked together on the beach.
At first, Shu Yue was a little heartbroken that the food had gone bad, but after picking them up, he became numb to it. He only put particularly intact, beautiful, and fresh fish and shrimp into his basket.
Here, near the ocean, the temperature is warmer and more humid. The orcs didn't mind the cold and worked for quite a while.
A seafood feast was held in the middle of the night.
It has to be said that sea fish tastes much better than river fish. The meat is tender, fresh, and juicy. It doesn't need much seasoning; you can eat it plain with a hint of the fish's sweetness.
This was the first time Badger had ever eaten fresh seafood. He didn't even look up, just kept slurping. The half-grown cub ate a lot, almost as much as Pig Mountain.
Everyone busied themselves filling their stomachs. Pig Mountain and Badger Village wouldn't let them keep watch at night, insisting on doing it themselves, but Badger Village was still just a half-grown cub.
Lin Baiyan thought for a moment, "Then I'll keep it with Badger. I happen to want to cook some oyster sauce."
Zhu Shan thought it was a good idea, "Then you two take the first half of the night, and I'll take the second half."
People are most likely to get sleepy in the middle of the night, so let them get some rest.
Lin Baiyan nodded, picked up a slightly smaller earthenware pot and started cooking oyster sauce. The few sub-beastmen had just finished eating and didn't feel sleepy, so they gathered around Lin Baiyan and cooked with him.
Badger also squeezed in to join in the fun, and even took out a piece of dried sweet potato from his pocket. He had exchanged it with Lin Baiyan when he was working earlier. The priest's dried sweet potato tasted much better than others.
It's not hard to eat; it's a bit chewy, sweet, and has a satisfying texture.
Lin Baiyan smiled slightly as he listened to Huancun's words.
Of course! Don't be fooled by how small these sweet potato chips are; they're actually quite a lot of work to make.
