Chapter 1754 - 1184: Questions Rising to the Surface
"Swish!"
In a wave of space, Reiger and his group appeared inside a grand hall.
This was a very spacious hall, its original purpose unknown, but now it had been completely emptied.
Countless clergy members were now here, some discussing in a panic, some hurriedly treating the wounded, while others were rushing about loudly advising others, making the whole hall look like a makeshift shelter, filled with anxiety, confusion, and helplessness.
Thankfully, this place hadn’t been invaded by that evil darkness.
Because, the darkness had been kept outside the hall.
"Boom—"
In a roar-like thunderous sound, the darkness collided like a beast horde from outside the hall, attempting to invade the hall’s interior, to devour all the survivors inside the temple.
But the darkness, despite numerous ferocious collisions, was ultimately stopped.
Groups of priests stood outside the hall, forming a line, dressed in uniform vestment robes, holding various-shaped wands, chanting solemn incantations, letting enormous magic power rise, intertwining to form a gigantic magic barrier, encompassing the entire hall.
Outside the hall, the darkness was blocked by this barrier, seemingly angered, continually crashing against it, causing the roars to keep sounding.
Additionally, a group of temple knights were also outside the hall, fully armed, battling against creatures from the darkness.
On closer inspection, those creatures were simply people from the temple, dressed entirely in clergy attire.
Yet, they had lost reason, their eyes all pitch-black, as if having fallen into hell, transformed into evil spirits, roaring furiously, charging towards the hall’s direction fearlessly.
The temple knights were battling these people, but could only barely maintain their defensive stance.
Reiger could see that the temple knights weren’t incapable of defeating those people, they just deliberately held back, not daring to strike harshly, fighting cautiously, showing considerable restraint, thus only barely maintaining their defense without advancing the battle line.
This was understandable.
Those people were indeed all from the temple, companions of those here.
The temple clearly didn’t wish to abandon them, trying to rescue them in various ways.
The evidence was that whenever someone fell, a group of clerics would immediately rush over, bring them back into the hall, and perform various magics on them, trying to awaken their remaining sanity.
Unfortunately, no matter how refined the clerics’ magic, how high-level the magic performed, they couldn’t awaken their sanity, instead, some surged up again furiously after waking, attacking those around, causing many to get injured.
But, even so, the temple didn’t plan to give up, those injured showed no anger, instead looking worriedly at their frenzied companions.
Under such circumstances, the clerics could only temporarily bind their frenzied companions with magic.
One side was full of aggression, while the other was cautious, lacking battle fervor, resulting in the temple comprehensively falling into a defensive and declining stance during this sudden attack.
Were it not for the numerous strong individuals in the temple, presently able to maintain the situation with impressive combat prowess, the temple might have already fallen under such tactics.
"How did it come to this?"
Liz was stunned.
"..."
Yuloli remained silent, her gaze growing colder.
"Were they infected by that darkness?"
Lilith noticed something, speaking with a frown.
"Yes." The High Priest glanced at the silent Reiger, saying to the group, "They’ve been corrupted and polluted by an evil force called Abyssal Aura, currently fallen as infected individuals, losing their reason."
Abyssal Aura?
Both Liz and Lilith looked towards the High Priest.
"It is a dreadful force from another world." The High Priest spoke startling words, addressing Liz and Lilith, "In the distant past, the Reinnaier clan followed ’God’s guidance to various other worlds, adventuring and exploring therein."
"Among them, there’s one world deeply connected to our current world, numerous Reinnaier members have visited there throughout the generations."
"It’s said that whether it’s the holy sword of Reinnaier or Tistis, both originate from that world."
The High Priest’s words shocked Liz.
"Moslo... comes from that other world?"
Liz looked at the Moslo sword in her arms.
"Correct." The High Priest nodded, stating, "But what arrived from that world wasn’t just great creations like holy swords, but also disasters."
"The ancient magical civilization was destroyed due to a disaster from that world."
"And this Abyssal Aura was spread by the ’King of Calamity’ during that disaster, a force capable of infecting and corrupting others, causing them to lose reason and become furious infected individuals."
Strictly speaking, Abyssal Aura isn’t really a force, but rather a substance found everywhere in the abyss.
Just as the environment humans live in contains atmosphere and necessary oxygen, Abyssal Aura in the abyss is akin to air, atmosphere, and oxygen-like substances.
